Using the app

Why is the shutter so heavy?
That's the point. Révéler counts each capture like a roll of film — twenty-four per day, a soft cap that resets at local midnight. The cap is on by default but dismissable in Settings → Slow down → Daily frame cap if you'd rather not. Slowing the shutter down is the whole philosophy of the app; we don't want it to feel convenient.
What do the gestures during the develop bath do?
Tap the tray to agitate — a ripple spreads through the fluid and the next phase lands a little faster. Swipe down to lift the print early before it's fully developed. Long-press to pause and study the frame mid-reveal. When the bath finishes, tap Keep to save or Discard to skip. There's no in-between.
How do I switch film stocks?
Tap the small pill above the lens picker that reads PORTRA · 0/24 · ISO 100 · 1/60 on first launch. It opens a menu with all five stocks (Portra 400, Tri-X 400, Ektachrome 100, Cinestill 800T, Ilford HP5+). Each one's history is in Settings → Film Stocks.
Can I shoot in RAW?
Not in v1 — Révéler captures HEIC (or JPEG as fallback). RAW/DNG support is on the roadmap for a future update.
Does it work on iPad?
Not in v1. iPhone only, portrait, iOS 18 and later. The camera layout is deliberately tuned for one-hand use on a phone.

Permissions & privacy

Why does Révéler ask for camera permission?
To see. The camera preview uses the camera. We don't record audio, we don't send anything to a server, and you can revoke the permission anytime in iOS Settings — the viewfinder will show a "Camera access is off" overlay with a Settings-app shortcut so you can re-enable.
Why does it ask for Photos access?
Only if you enable "Save to Photos" in Settings. Révéler requests Add-only permission — it can write new assets to your library but can never read or delete anything that's already there. If you don't toggle Save to Photos on, the app never asks for this permission at all.
Do you collect any data?
No. No analytics, no crash reports, no event telemetry, no user ID, no view counts. Zero third-party SDKs. Zero network calls. Put the device in airplane mode and every feature still works — because nothing ever leaves your device. See the full privacy policy for the line-by-line breakdown.

Where photos live

Where are my frames stored?
In the app's private sandbox on your device — inside the Documents/frames/ folder of the app, invisible to other apps. If you turn on Save to Photos in Settings, each new frame is also copied to your system Photos library.
Do frames survive a reinstall?
They survive an iOS backup → restore because the app's sandbox is included in iCloud/iTunes backups. They do not survive a delete-and-reinstall — if you remove the app, iOS removes its sandbox. Enable Save to Photos if you want a durable off-device copy.
Can I get my frames out?
Yes. From the contact sheet tap any frame and use the share button — the image goes to Photos, Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or any other share target. You can also export the whole contact sheet as a PDF from the filter menu.

Troubleshooting

The develop screen says "Nothing to develop."
The bath is driven by the shutter on the previous screen — you reached the develop view without a captured frame in flight. Tap "Back to camera" and shoot a frame to start a bath.
I denied camera access and now see a black screen.
Tap "Open Settings" on the overlay. When you grant the permission and return, the viewfinder auto-recovers without a relaunch.
The camera froze after a phone call.
Rare — should auto-recover when the call ends. If the viewfinder stays frozen, swipe Révéler off the app switcher and relaunch. If it keeps happening, please send us the repro.
The daily frame cap says I've hit 24/24 but I haven't.
The cap counts attempted captures, not saved frames — so if you shot and discarded, those still count (just like clicking the shutter on a real film camera). Turn the cap off in Settings → Slow down → Daily frame cap if that's a problem.
I can't see the Live Activity in the Dynamic Island.
Live Activities need to be enabled system-wide in iOS Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) → Allow Access When Locked → Live Activities, and in Settings → Notifications → Live Activities. Révéler also skips the Live Activity on devices without a Dynamic Island (everything from iPhone 14 Pro and later has one).

Siri & shortcuts

What can I ask Siri?
Four phrases ship with v1:
  • "Open Révéler camera" — wakes the app on the camera screen.
  • "Open Révéler contact sheet" — jumps to the library.
  • "Open Révéler Knowledge Center" — opens the in-app field guide.
  • "Start a new Révéler roll called [name]" — creates and activates a roll.
Are there URL shortcuts I can use in Shortcuts.app?
Yes. Révéler exposes a custom URL scheme:
  • reveler://camera — open the camera
  • reveler://sheet — open the contact sheet
  • reveler://knowledge — open the knowledge center
  • reveler://settings — open settings
  • reveler://roll/new?name=Tokyo — open the new-roll sheet pre-filled with "Tokyo" (names are trimmed and capped at 64 characters)
